SNAFU: there really is no hope for the human race. I'd rather be a Lemming.

So we're human, right. I'm human, you're human, your family is human, my family is half human... etcetera, etcetera. We're just another species really, another member of the animal kingdom in which each species should be equal (not in strength, size or intelligence but equal because they're all alive and all should be given an equal chance at life). If you look at it that way, there's no difference (I mean in importance, obviously there are many biological differences)  between me and  a spider. If I decided kill that spider, no one would care. But if that spider wasn't a spider, but a person, and I decided to kill them with my shovel (I'm very fond of my shovel, he's called Patrick and he comes in handy sometimes), I'd be arrested. There isn't really a difference, both ways the population of all living things would just go down by one.

I've got slightly off the point here, and you all probably think I'm some kind of heartless psychopath who goes round killing people with Patrick the shovel thinking it's okay because there's no difference between a human being and a spider. That might be the case, but that's not what I'm writing about here. I'm writing because today, I was thinking 'What makes humans so superior?'

Well, today I was also thinking about something Rene Descartes once said: 'I think therefore I am'. This quote sums up how important the thought process is in humans and how it's probably the most important thing that makes us human, different from animals. So basically it's the way we think, we're capable of more complex thought processes. But this isn't necessarily a good thing...

Look at other species. You could say some of them are heartless, they don't care about anyone but themselves and do anything to survive. But compared to us they're saints. Do you ever see a herd of Zebra turning against a Zebra from their own herd just because they have, I don't know, different stripes? No. That might sound ridiculous, but let's be honest humans probably would do something like that. The way I see it, our bigger brains and our ability to have our own opinions makes us horrible, selfish, brutal creatures. Not all of us, but a lot of us are racist, sexist, homophobic, selfish, ignorant, self-obsessed, hedonistic, power-crazed and/or just plain evil.

I mean, think about people like Hitler, Gaddafi and Kony, think of the disgusting things they did. They were/are human, they may have been/be mentally ill but they were still human. Human like you and me. Humans do horrible things to other humans, humans do horrible things to other species, humans make other species go extinct. In fact, the worst thing any species would do is come into contact with humans. As a race, not (always) as individuals, we're awful. Have you ever heard of any other species (except Lemmings, we mustn't forget about the Lemmings) committing suicide, or genocide, or homicide? Probably not.

Okay, I'm definitely rambling now. Hopefully you get my drift: being human isn't necessarily something to be proud of. We're the laughing stock of the animal kingdom. Apparently the earth is going to freeze or burn or some shit like that in the distant future (due to global warming- another way in which our race have royally FUBAR*-ed themselves and everything/one else around them), but somehow I don't think man will live anywhere near long enough to see that, we'll just drive ourselves to extinction with our own bloody weapons like the self-destructive idiots that we are. We get jealous, we fight, we kill, we exploit... the list goes on. When I watch the news, one thought runs through my head: SNAFU*.

Now here's a cute picture of a Lemming to cheer you up and congratulate you for reading all this depressing crap that's been circulating in my brain for the last couple of hours:

Isn't that just adorable?

*FUBAR: fucked up beyond all recognition (Slang used by the American army, during *I think, please don't quote me on this one* the Korean war.
